Cyclocross Bikes
The first ride-worthy bike I designed and built was a cyclocross
bike. I was motivated by the seeming lack of race-worthy
cross gear at the time (remember, this was before the production
cross bike boom). I wanted to create a no-compromise machine,
and I sweated over all the details. The result is a bike
that has enjoyed tremendous success, as far away as the World Championships
in Zolder, Belgium.
The cross bike is one of the most purpose-built racing bikes in
cycling. Do not confuse it with a touring bike with cantilever
brakes. The temper of the bike will be largely determined
by the strengths and weaknesses of the rider. The handling
will be adjusted based on the technical skills of the pilot and
his or her preferences.
I pride myself on searching out and supplying some of the most
hard-to-find cross-specific components. A fast frame
needs fast wheels. Hand-built wheels from
ergottWheels are used
on all complete builds. Tubular wheels and tires have proved
to be the fastest choice for all but the nastiest conditions. Some
clincher tires offer an advantage on some courses when increased
traction trumps decreased rolling resistance. Multiple sets
of wheels with different rubber choices on race day are always
a good idea!
Spooky cantilever brakes are the common choice for speed control. Spooky
also offers chaingurds for single chainring setups. In terms
of drive train and controls, the battle rages on between Campagnolo
and Shimano. My suggestion is to stick with what you already
have for road, so that your current wheels can be used on your
cross bike too.
Everyone should try cross. It is a fantastic way to spend
your fall and winter every year, and is very addictive! When
you are ready to put together an all out cross racing machine, give
me a call.
